The CFL's Super Bowl VI will feature two Air Coryell teams, the 1975 St. Louis Cardinals vs the 1979 San Diego Chargers. The Cardinals (10-4) finished in 2nd place and defeated the 1977 Dallas Cowboys (26-17) & the 1975 Los Angeles Rams (31-7) to reach the big game. The Chargers (9-5), coached by Stu Geller received an opening round bye and defeated the 1977 Denver Broncos (26-3) in the AFC Championship.
Both teams had dominating performances in their respective Conference Championship Games. The Cardinals scored early and often against the favored Rams. Mel Gray caught a huge play action pass against a tight run D to start the scoring as the Cards never looked back. The fact that St. Louis' "D" came to play made all the difference.
The Chargers defeated the Broncos for the second time in 3 weeks behind a conservative game plan and Dan Fouts only making one mistake. The Chargers "D" also came to play as they stymied the benign Bronco offense, which could never got anything going.
The 6th CFL Super Bowl will be held at the New Orleans Super Dome.
